Common Questions

1. How do I get access and training?

Please access this prior blog post with access information.  You will need manager approval, then complete the online Fundamentals course (approx. 2 hrs) to receive view and events information.  If you need more advanced access, such as recording interactions or setting up events, please check out the training calendar for offerings and registration info.

2.  There is functionality I’d like to see in the system.  How can I request it?

You can request functionality through this survey.  Please include as much information as possible.  The form will be sent to the OwlConnect team, reviewed, and added to the list of requested enhancements if accepted.  Please note that there are some Blackbaud deliverables that are still being tested and have not yet been released (giving summaries and the BBIS portal).

3.  I’m having trouble – how can I get support?

Upon completion of Fundaments, you will have access to the OwlConnect Support Center.  There, you will find support resources, guides, and a link to the training calendar.  Open Labs are periodically offered that are staffed by functional experts where you can come in for questions.  For specific issues, you can email owlconnect@rice.edu.

4. When can my department be onboarded?

Once the system stabilizes and the currently identified users receive training, requests for enhanced functionality and department-specific information will be prioritized to be added to the system.  Please reach out to Development Information Services (Rochelle Salazar) for specific requests.

5. What is the difference between SallyPortal and OwlConnect?

OwlConnect and Sallyportal are both supported by Development and Alumni Relations, but the vision for both initiatives is much broader.  The value of both solutions is more quickly realized as utilization grows.  However, they are designed to fulfill different objectives.

  • OwlConnect vision: Maximize coordinated opportunities for Rice constituents to make a difference through their engagement and philanthropy.
  • Sallyportal vision: Build a world class professional development program.

6. What are the different job functions available in the system?

Access to the system is role-based, assigned to each individual user – and once related training is completed.  Upon completion of Fundamentals, users will receive view-only access to events and constituent data.  An individual could have multiple roles to allow him / her to carry out job functions.  Some example types of roles:

  • Constituent view or update
  • Events coordinator
  • Membership manager
  • Prospect researcher
  • Reporting analyst
  • Marketing specialist
  • Administrator
